What is granite and why is it the best choice for you?

Granite is a natural, igneous material which is available in a wide range of natural colors.

The stone is a composition of countless minerals and molten rock that solidified within the crust thousands and thousands of years ago – which is why every granite slab is unique.

Being one of the hardest materials in the world, granite has been used for centuries as a construction material, a decorative stone, an architectural stone, etc.

It’s still a very popular choice for interior and exterior applications in the 21st century!

Why choose granite?

Why choose granite?

A granite kitchen countertop is the best choice if you have a traditional-looking kitchen.

Some people use granite as a synonym for elegance: it’s a natural stone which was the king of the kitchen countertops for decades and it still remains one of the most popular materials among homeowners.

Thanks to the unique characteristics, it’s more than just pretty: granite countertops can be your most useful kitchen tool:

  • Heat Resistant: place a hot pot onto it and there will be no signs of damage.
  • Almost invulnerable: very difficult to scratch or crack.
  • Almost (!) maintenance-free: if it is properly sealed, you only need to clean it with regular soap and water.
  • Impressive lifespan: it will last a lifetime without going out of style.

Important question: Can I cut on it?

Short answer: of course you can!

Long answer: of course, you can however, granite is one of the strongest materials in the world (it has the second highest hardness rating after diamonds) but it doesn’t mean you should use it as a cutting board because even the most professional chef knife will become dull if you do so.

How to take care of granite countertops?

How to take care of granite countertops?

Sealing.

Granite is a porous material and because of this it is absorbent: wine, oil, juice, etc. creates an indelible stain on it which is not just bad-looking but also unsanitary as it could hold bacteria.

However, if your countertop is properly sealed by a professional, you don’t have to worry about these problems.

Generally, a common sealer product lasts only one year, but our special Senguard sealer will last for 15 years, so you don’t have to reseal it every year.

Proper cleaning is very important; never use harsh chemicals and sponges, only regular soap and water or a granite cleaner.

Harmful chemicals will break down the sealant and your countertop will become vulnerable to stains again.

Granite is one of the hardest stones but it doesn’t mean that it withstands everything.

If you hit it really hard, you can crack it and only a professional can repair it.

Granite kitchen countertop colors

Granite kitchen countertop colors

No two granite slabs are the same.

You can choose from a variety of colors, so the possibilities are endless!

As we said before, every granite slab was once a molten rock, and the composition of the original rock determines the color of the granite.

Some examples:

  • if quartz was the main ingredient, the color will be probably white;
  • potassium feldspar makes a salmon pink color;
  • and muscovite is responsible for the gold and yellow shades.

The combination of the countless minerals determines the final color and that’s why you can’t find two completely identical granite slabs.

Different colors have different prices; if you want to know more about it, come and visit our showroom, and you will get answers for all question you may have!

Granite has a wide price range.

There are a lot of factors that affect the cost of granite kitchen countertops: the three most important questions are:

  • Where did it come from?

If the slab was mined in a different country and had a long journey before it arrived at your home, the cost will be greater.

  • What color did you choose?

The color of granite depends on many things, and therefore the costs are different depending on if it’s a rare or a common shade.

  • How difficult was the mining?

If the granite slab is deeper, or under harder surfaces, the mining process takes longer and is therefore more expensive.

Granite increases the value of the house, and home buyers pay more for a kitchen with this material in it.

We had the great fortune to come across Zsolt Granite Corporation during our search for new kitchen cabinets. Zsolt and his employees were amazing from the first visit to the final walk-through after the completion of the project. He really took the time at the beginning of the project to talk to us about our needs and how we planned on using our new kitchen. We obviously had some ideas of what we wanted, but without Zsolt's consultation, we would have made some BIG mistakes that could have cost us greatly. They exceeded our exceptions in every aspect of the project. He and his employees were extremely professional and took great care to not damage anything that was not being replaced. The kitchen looks amazing and we have received wonderful compliments from our family and friends. It was a real pleasure working with Zsolt and his entire staff and would highly recommend them!
