Secrets of quartz kitchen countertops

Websites say that quartz countertops are a mixture of 93% quartz and 7% resin binder.

This is only partially true because these numbers are based on the weight; by volume, the typical ratio is 65% quartz and 35% resin.

Quartz is an extremely hard and quite forgiving material and given these features, it is easier to fabricate and install.

Natural or not?

Quartz kitchen countertop – looks like a natural stone… but better

Quartz slabs are made from engineered stone; it’s a man-made product, however, the main ingredient, quartz crystals, are mined just like granite and marble.

Due to the added resins and polymers, quartz countertops have a nonporous, stain and scratch resistant surface.

This means that quartz is

  • sanitary: the countertop will never harbor bacteria or viruses in its pores,
  • low-maintenance: it doesn’t need much work (like sealing) to keep in good condition,
  • durable: harder than granite; chip and scratch resistant.

The only thing the quartz is not superior in like its competitors is the heat-resistance; if you put a hot pan on it, the sudden heat may cause a crack on the surface – so always use a hot pad instead.

It’s a green product

Consumers of the 21st century try to make eco-efficient decisions which is why they choose quartz kitchen countertops.

Why?

Granite and marble slabs are 100% natural – but how can an artificial countertop be more environmentally friendly?

The mining and transportation of the granite and marble creates a large carbon footprint, in contrast, quartz slabs are made from recycled materials (glass for example).

How to take care for my quartz kitchen countertop?

As it was mentioned before, quartz has a non-porous surface due to resin and polymer, therefore the countertop resists stains and scratches.

Heat can be a problem, however, just use a trivet or a hot pad to avoid burning.

One of the best features is that there’s is no need for constant and complicated maintenance – it doesn’t require sealing and can be cleaned with soap, water, and a soft sponge or cloth or a cleaner made for quartz countertops.

There is only one rule: never use harsh chemicals that can disintegrate the bond between resins and quartz.

Quartz countertops are not indestructible; dropping of heavy objects can lead to chips and cracks, and highly acidic liquids can leave a stain.

Although quartz is perfect for both kitchen countertops and bathroom vanity countertops, there is one place where it is not recommended to install.

Direct sunlight can discolor quartz, so we (and other professionals) don’t suggest any outdoor application.

Testimonial

We had the great fortune to come across Zsolt Granite Corporation during our search for new kitchen cabinets. Zsolt and his employees were amazing from the first visit to the final walk-through after the completion of the project. He really took the time at the beginning of the project to talk to us about our needs and how we planned on using our new kitchen. We obviously had some ideas of what we wanted, but without Zsolt's consultation, we would have made some BIG mistakes that could have cost us greatly. They exceeded our exceptions in every aspect of the project. He and his employees were extremely professional and took great care to not damage anything that was not being replaced. The kitchen looks amazing and we have received wonderful compliments from our family and friends. It was a real pleasure working with Zsolt and his entire staff and would highly recommend them!
